Increased Trade at Pakistan's Borders

Increased Trade at Pakistan's Borders addresses constraints at Pakistan's border crossings that effect trade and transit with neighboring countries. Specifically, the Project focuses on providing support to Pakistan Government in improving Afghan Pakistan Transit Trade.

The Project is providing technical assistance at critical crossing points and key transit corridors focusing on the following activities:

  • Harmonization of Pakistan Customs procedures, systems and regulations pertaining to transit trade at the borders to facilitate effective and efficient movement of goods through Pakistan at the Afghan borders.
  • The implementation of Pakistan's Bond Guarantee System.
  • Setting up single business window at borders for improved transit facilitation.
  • Improved, cost effective and reliable land logistic services within Pakistan.
  • Stemming unauthorized trade at Pakistan-Afghanistan borders.
  • Building the human resource capacity of border officials to handle passengers and freight.

The Trade Project's efforts in this component are designed to advance reforms in the legal and regulatory framework, policies and procedures, human resources and infrastructure that affect the efficiency and transparency of border crossings into and out of Pakistan. To advance reforms in these areas, the Trade Project is building the capacity of officials and institutions that effect cross-border trade. It also directly improves government investment in infrastructure and provides support to local and cross-border business institutions to strengthen their capacity to lobby for more efficient cross border processes.

Principle Objectives of the Component

  • Increased cross border trade.
  • Improved trade facilitation along the Afghan border (APTTA implementation, capacity building and infrastructure).
  • Improved transit facilitation (policies, procedures, bond regime and single window).
